Working with Melanie

About Melanie

Melanie Cullis studied Traditional Chinese Medicine intensively for three years at the renowned City College of Acupuncture in London and graduated with a First-class degree licentiate. She is a fully-licensed member of The British Acupuncture Council, which guarantees her training was at the highest level possible and that she is backed by full professional indemnity insurance. Membership of the Council also ensures registration with the Professional Standards Authority which is a government body accountable to Parliament, giving its members enhanced status with the NHS, and private health insurers.

Melanie is also a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network, an organisation for acupuncturists with advanced training in fertility.

What happens in your consultation

At your first meeting, Melanie will take a detailed history as everything is relevant to your current state of health. Melanie’s clinic is a safe, non-judgmental space and everything discussed will be treated as highly confidential. The aim is to uncover the root cause of an issue so that balance in the body and mind can be restored.

Melanie will recommend how many treatments are appropriate to you, this is a collaboration of your health over the coming weeks and months, moving you to a state of wellness and then moving to less frequent 'maintenance’ appointments.

A key aspect of this medicine is a realistic, bespoke dietary and lifestyle programme, which empowers clients to support and maintain their health outside of the clinic for the long-term.

In addition to acupuncture, Melanie may also integrate other tools such as gua sha, infrared heat lamp, moxa (a herb used to warm specific areas of the body) and electro-acupuncture.

About acupuncture: The science

Different acupuncture points are used to direct responses to different areas of the body. Studies on the body have shown that Acupuncture releases neurotransmitters, endorphins, our feel-good hormones (200 times more potent than morphine), and regulates serotonin.

Acupuncture also down-regulates an overactive Sympathetic Nervous System, the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response, and up-regulates our Parasympathetic Nervous System, the body’s ‘rest and relaxation’ response.

Acupuncture can increase circulation, decrease inflammation, ease muscle spasms and increase T-cell count to support the immune system.

In the area of gynaecology and fertility specifically, Acupuncture studies have shown it assists in blood flow to the Uterus, releases stagnation (e.g. pain) and improves egg and sperm quality.
